Global trends in antibiotic consumption

A new report on antibiotic use in 76 countries over 16 years provides an up-to-date, comprehensive assessment of global trends in antibiotic consumption. In general, the global antibiotic consumption expressed in defined daily doses (DDD) jumped by 65% to 34.8 billion daily doses between 2000 and 2015 and the antibiotic consumption rate increased nearly 40%.

The high rise in figures was driven almost entirely by increasing consumption in low- and middle-income countries where the rising incomes were the major driver of increased antibiotic consumption. An additional concern is the sharp rise in global consumption of last-resort antibiotics.  The report also provides projected total global antibiotic consumption figures for 2000–2030 with three scenarios, offering alarming estimations: Without effective interventions to control antibiotics overuse, the number of antibiotics handed out globally could rise more than 200% by 2030.
